Trauma Surgery Physician – Locum Tenens in Fort Wayne, Indiana
Join a Level II trauma center as a locum tenens Trauma Surgeon and provide high-acuity surgical critical care in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This on-site physician opportunity is ideal for a board-certified General Surgeon with fellowship training in Trauma or Surgical Critical Care who is prepared to provide comprehensive trauma surgery, critical care, and emergency general surgery coverage. Trauma Surgery Physician Job Details

- Contract Duration: Initial 13-week engagement with ongoing coverage needs
- Day Shift: 7:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with backup call for the following night shift
- Night Shift: 5:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m. the following day, with backup call for the preceding day shift
- Coverage Pattern: Beginning February 1, coverage may include 7 consecutive days, up to 21 days per month
- Clinical Volume: Approximately 10–20 patient encounters per shift
- Trauma Center Level: Level II
Trauma Surgeon and Surgical Critical Care Requirements
- Board certification in General Surgery and Critical Care
- Fellowship training in Trauma Surgery or Surgical Critical Care
- At least 1 year of post-training clinical experience in trauma surgery, surgical critical care, or a closely related specialty
- Active Indiana physician license
- Active controlled substance registration and DEA registration
- Current Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification
- Clean National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) and malpractice background
- Strong experience managing critically ill surgical and trauma patients
- General surgery, adult trauma, and pediatric trauma experience preferred
Trauma Surgery Physician Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive surgical care for trauma and critically ill patients in emergency, ICU, and inpatient settings
- Manage patients across medical-surgical, cardiovascular, and cardiac intensive care units
- Provide coverage for trauma surgery, surgical critical care, inpatient floors, and emergency general surgery based on daily team assignments
- Perform and manage procedures including chest tube placement, central line insertion, ventilation management, and other critical care interventions
- Evaluate and treat patients requiring appendectomy, cholecystectomy, hernia repair, wound management, and related general surgery procedures
- Participate in day and night backup call according to the established coverage model
- Provide outpatient surgical follow-up in clinic on Tuesdays and Thursdays, including evaluation of ongoing wounds and patients requiring future procedures
- Collaborate with surgeons and advanced practice providers to deliver timely, coordinated trauma and surgical care
- Document patient assessments, treatment plans, procedures, and follow-up recommendations accurately
